Program Summary
When rain falls in the City of Mesa, runoff water is collected by many different types of inlets. The water is then routed via curbs/gutters, pipes, open channels and other conveyances to community retention basins, parks, local lakes and rivers and area floodways. The runoff does not go to a treatment plant.
The City of Mesa operates a municipal storm sewer system under a permit issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. That permit requires Mesa to implement a number of different programs called Best Management Practices (BMPs). Some of these BMPs include:
- Retention Basin Maintenance
- Storm Drain Maintenance
- Street Sweeping
- Spill Response
- Household Hazardous Waste Collection
- Public Education
- Hazardous Materials Response
- Oversight of Industrial Facilities
- Support of Oil Recycling
- Oversight of Construction Sites
