When rain falls in the City of Mesa, runoff water is collected by many different types of inlets. The water is then routed via curbs/gutters, pipes, open channels and other conveyances to community retention basins, parks, local lakes and rivers and area floodways. The runoff does not go to a treatment plant.
In order to protect the quality of stormwater runoff, the City of Mesa obtained a permit from the Environmental Protection Agency in 1997. That permit requires Mesa to implement a number of different programs called Best Management Practices (BMPs). Some of these BMPs include:
- Retention Basin Maintenance
- Storm Drain Maintenance
- Street Sweeping
- Spill Response
- Household Hazardous Waste Collection
- Public Education
- Hazardous Materials Response
- Oversight of Industrial Facilities
- Support of Oil Recycling
- Oversight of Construction Sites
In addition to these BMPs, the City of Mesa created a stormwater ordinance, which prohibits the discharge of pollutants into the storm drain system. The following is a link to this ordinance, Title 8, Chapter 5: http://www.cityofmesa.org/clerk/CodeBook/title_8/Chapter_5/Ch_5_TOC.asp
