Program Summary

The City's storm drain system is composed of washes, drywells, roadways, storm drains, local lakes and retention basins. The storm drain system covers 161.7 miles. The City's primary discharge locations include: Town Lake , Papago Pond, Kiwanis Lake , Canal Park Lake , Indian Bend Wash and the Lower Salt Lake. Storm water runoff does not go to a treatment plant.

The City of Tempe is a Phase I community and has obtained a permit from the Environmental Protection Agency for Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System. The City is implementing best management practices (BMPs) to reduce the amount of pollutants entering the storm sewer system. The City has developed an implementation plan that is contained within the Storm Water Management Plan.

In addition to these BMPs, the City of Tempe has a storm water ordinance, which prohibits the discharge of pollutants into the storm drain system. The following is a link to this ordinance: Chapter 12: Drainage and Flood Control
