When rain falls in the City of Chandler, many different types of inlets collect runoff water. The water is then routed via curbs/gutters, pipes, open channels and other conveyances to community retention basins, parks, local lakes, rivers and area floodways. The runoff does not go to a treatment plant.
In order to protect the quality of stormwater runoff, the City of Chandler obtained a permit from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality in March 2003. That permit requires the City of Chandler to implement a number of different programs called Best Management Practices (BMPs). These BMPs include:
- Public Education and Outreach
- Public Participation and Involvement
- Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination
- Construction Site Storm Water Runoff Control
- Post-Construction Storm Water Management
- Pollution Prevention and Good Housekeeping
In addition to these BMPs, the City of Chandler has a nuisance (Chapter 30) and storm water (Chapter 45) sections of code, that address discharges of pollutants into the storm drain system. The City Code can be found under the City Hall button on the City of Chandler 's website.
